Backstory
Harry is a mock project assigned to my design cohort at Flatiron school. Fellow designers of the cohort paired up with another in multiple teams of two and was given 8 weeks to finish. Harry's essential function is to make after school program management simple and easy that's built similar to a cutting edge child care management system.
The Task
Build a multi-sided platform that connects students with after-school programs in their respective communities which in turn will help community programs maximize their customer reach. The stakeholder plans to offer free and low-cost programming for young adults across a wide-ranging socioeconomic spectrum by generating revenue through advertising and premium partners that pay to have their programs on the platform.

The stakeholder has stressed the need for the platform to build an active online community that brings value to partners and incentivizes continued funding.

The Challenge
Harry will be designed as a two sided platform. One side will be for students (children and teenagers, approximately 3-18 years old) and their legal guardians looking for after school programs. The other side which is our primary focus will be program managers, agencies and administrators posting and managing program offerings. The stakeholder's main goals are to develop the look and feel of the agency/administrative portal that improves program managers’ ability to easily understand and prioritize data being displayed. Lastly, the secondary target user (students) shall be kept in mind as the visual execution and brand should extend accordingly from each side of the platform.
Challenge #1
How can we make data visualizations feel less intimidating?
Challenge #2
How can we emphasize important information for administrators?
Challenge #3
How can we make the platform be more interactive and engaging?
Research & Conception
Me and my teammate Dave Dow split our research and conception work in half. I took on the visual competitive analysis & domain research while he focused on Harry's user testing. Our conception process consisted of each team member creating an individual mood board and stile tile. In order to find a final design direction we combined our tiles elements that received the most positive feedback from user testing and our design cohort.
Visual Competitive Analysis & Domain Research (Click dots to view more)
I wanted evaluate the major players in the child care management software industry to find patterns on how they organize data visualizations, color schemes and user engagement functionality.
Conception & User Testing
Overall me and my teammates' style tiles recieved very positive feedback. Research participants were young adults 21 - 36 with office jobs that require them to interact with desktop computers for majority of the work day.
Design Solutions
The design goals for project Harry were primary focused to delivering a clean and simple visual design layout for program managers or executives. Data visualizations were designed in a unique way by adopting a dark mode theme. The background contrasts well with key data cards and graphs. Lastly, for interaction we developed tools for parents and program managers to chat and edit live information fields within the students profile.
